Alanya - TURKEY

Dear Beach Volleyball Friends,

I am glad to announce that we will have our first world championships in beach volleyball! The event gives elite deaf beach volleyball athletes from around the world an opportunity to compete against each other on the beach by the Mediterranean Sea in Alanya, Turkey.

During my site inspection visit, I learned that the city has a strong tradition of hosting different international events in different sports, such as beach volleyball (CEV and FIVB), cycling, triathlon, marathon swimming and mountain biking. I am confident that the 2012 world deaf beach volleyball championships will be managed well.

The year 2012 is certainly a busy year for the Turkish Deaf Sports Federation(TDSF) EDSO basketball championships (June), ICSD world football championships (July), and ICSD world beach volleyball championships (September). Less than a year ago, the ICSD congress granted Turkey the rights to host the 2017 Summer Deaflympics. Hosting several international events this year gives Turkey an opportunity to gain experience and publicity it needs to prepare for the Summer Deaflympics in Ankara five years from now.

On behalf of ICSD and the deaf sports community, I want to thank the TDSF for stepping forward at the last minute when Ukraine withdrew as host due to lack of funds.

If you are looking for news, names of participants, results, and photos, the official website is

Good luck to all beach volleyball athletes!
